About JET Programme

The JET Programme is the largest international exchange programme in the world. Currently, approximately 1,000 local public organisations (contracting organisations), including 46 prefectures and 18 designated cities employ JET Programme participants. Each JET Programme participant is employed as one of the following positions: Assistant Language Teacher (ALT), Coordinator for International Relations (CIR), or Sports Exchange Advisor (SEA). All JET participants, regardless of their title, are here for the same reason: to interact with local communities to promote internationalisation at the local level.

Enriching Japan’s Foreign Language Education and Promoting Internationalisation

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme is an initiative that aims to enrich Japan’s foreign language education and promote internationalisation by inviting young adults from around the world to be employed by local governments and related organisations in Japan. The programme was established in 1987, with 848 participants from four countries. Since then, the number of participants has increased significantly, with over 5,000 participants from 57 countries at present. The JET Programme is administered through the collaboration of Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (MEXT), and the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR).
