Presentation Technology-mediated feedback
Giving oral feedback on recorded presentations using Loom
Loom is a video messaging tool with screen recording capabilities. They offer a free account for educators, with the capacity to record simultaneously from your camera and screen. In education, teachers can utilize it in various ways, including providing authentic recorded feedback on their students’ oral presentations or recorded presentations. In my teaching context, students are generally of low language ability, despite taking my Elective Communicative English class. They often get very nervous about short speaking tests and often blank out. I tried a new test format, having them record their speaking. I then play their recording on my screen, stopping their recording to give authentic feedback. I then send them the link to the video. Students reported feeling less stressed. They also liked the individual feedback on pronunciation, their use of English, and the content. In this presentation, participants will be introduced to the basics of Loom, how to make a free educator account, and an example of how I used Loom. Other possible uses of Loom will also be discussed. It is hoped that participants will benefit from the session by discovering a new digital tool that could be helpful in their teaching contexts.
